Valie Export: Tap, Touch, Burn
The uncompromising, impossible to pigeonhole Valie Export, neé Waltraud Lehner in Linz, Austria, who passed away at age 85 in May of this year, was a force of nature, working at one time or another in performance and installation art, photography, “expanded cinema,” and video, exploring the capacity of the female body as a space for artistic investigation and political resistance. While one can only hope to platform a fraction of Export’s prodigious output via a cinema screen, in this program—which incorporates both narrative features and shorts—we showcase a crucial aspect of an incendiary, indefatigable, and always provocative artist’s sprawling avant-garde practice.
